Alert Fatigue

The more alerts people get, the less each one means, until they ignore them or switch them off.

Why it matters

Each poor alert teaches people that alerts are not worth reading. Someone who switches off can no longer be reached at all.

How to use it

  • Judge extra alerts by what the extra ones add.
  • Let people choose topics and frequency.
  • Count opt-outs in every alert test.

Example

Tripling alerts took opens from 400 to 900, but the extra 20,000 alerts opened at only 2.5%.

Watch out

Total opens can rise while the channel is dying. Opens alone will not warn you.
