Cognitive Load

The amount of mental effort a design asks for.

Why it matters

Effort spent understanding the screen is effort not spent on the goal.

How to use it

  • Remove what is not needed.
  • Use familiar patterns.
  • Ask for information later if you can.

Example

Cutting a sign-up form from 9 fields to 3 reduces effort, and usually lifts completion.
