Progressive Disclosure

Show what people need now, and leave the rest until they need it.

Why it matters

Fewer things at once means less to take in. People can see where to start, and the details are there when they matter.

How to use it

  • Decide what most people need first.
  • Move the rest to a later step or behind a clear link.
  • Tell people how long the whole thing will take.

Example

An ID check lists three things to prepare, and only gives camera tips at the moment you take the photo.

Watch out

Hiding something important, such as a fee, is not disclosure. It is deception.
